Manage Your Career Like A Startup: Get Off of the Escalator to Nowhere

So many of us have been on the escalator to nowhere which to me seems like an episode of the Twilight Zone. If your career is on the escalator to nowhere, you may not be aware until you try something different. By the time that you find out it may be too late…you have entered the Twilight Zone.
I was recently reading The Startup of You by Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha recently where they talk about adopting a startup mentality for your career. “Due to macroeconomic forces like globalization and technology, the escalator has come to a standstill at every level. There are fewer people retiring, hardly any entry-level positions opening up and employees in middle management find themselves waiting for promotions which might never come.”
Sound familiar? You work hard and you know that you have more to offer but things just are not coming together for you.
Well, Reid and Ben say it is time to apply a start-up mentality. Startup companies have always had to deal with unpredictability and you should do the same with your professional development.
What does it mean to apply a startup mentality to your career?
Consider yourself in permanent beta mode or a work in progress
Be eager to learn and develop
If taking a corporate job lowers your risk short-term but does not get you to where you want to go, why are you on the escalator in the first place?
Adopt a start-up mentality to get off of the career escalator to nowhere and take charge of where you are going.
